Dessert Protein

We are back in action!

In fact, we would have posted a new recipe sooner, but we’ve just been so busy since we got back from the cottage! We left on Sunday at 11, drove home, went straight to work, went to bed, went to work again the next morning, went from work to track practise, got home and crashed. So now we FINALLY have some spare seconds to write something! 🙂

Without further ado, Tofu Mousse!

Strawberry-Basil tofu mousse, to be exact!

This recipe was inspired by Meg when she did her tofu mousse and her strawberry-basil combo. Our recipe is our own spin, kind of a combo of her two fabulous ideas! Of course, we’ve done tofu mousse before, but that was for breakfast. Tofu mousse is so yummy, though, we just new it would make an awesome bed time snack! Why bedtime, specifically? Because protein is so important for athletes and those who work out regularly to eat before bed! When we sleep, we go into a “fasting state”, in which our body will start to feed off of itself, in a way. Unfortunately, the body doesn’t use fat first, it goes after muscle, so all of that muscle you worked so hard to build becomes less. However, a bed time snack high in protein allows the body to feed off of that protein, instead of your muscles. [source].

Tofu Mousse is therefore perfect! If you have to eat something high in protein before bed, why not make it taste like a light and fluffy dessert?

 Mmmmm…… tofu mousse! 🙂

Now I know putting basil in a dessert sounds strange, but fear not! It is really, really delicious! I mean really people, we put sweet things in savoury dishes all the time, what’s wrong with turning the tables and putting savoury in sweet? Nothing.

The basil adds a lovely demention to the dish, and if you didn’t know that it was in there, you would never think “Oh, there’s basil in this dessert!”. Honest! And it just goes so well with the strawberry.

In case you’re wondering, no, we did not use strawberries from our little strawberry plant, unfortunately it doesn’t seem to want to produce any more fruit! We used strawberries from our neighbors instead 🙂 . Love summer!

So, I give you a healthy, high-protein, gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free, sweet, fruity, scrumptious, bed-time snack.

Strawberry-Basil Tofu Mousse

Serves: 2

Prep time: 10 min tops!

Ingredients:

1/2 block firm tofu

1/2 c. fresh strawberries

1/4 c. fresh basil leaves

2 Tbsp. honey

1-2 tbsp strawberry jam

Directions:

Add all ingredients to food processor and blend until smooth. Stir in additional chopped strawberries and top with oats or crunchy granola and chopped walnuts if desired.
